The partnership will allow the technical collaboration between the Thunder Bay Chill and ISM for the purpose of expanding Empoli’s scouting activity. The goal of the partnership is for ISM to start an Empoli FC development center here in Thunder Bay with the Chill.

Italian Soccer Management (ISM) was created with the aim of supporting Italian Professional Clubs through the creation of an international scouting network to detect, select and develop young talented players. ISM staff developed its own methodology of coaching according to Italian Soccer demands and provides all conditions to train and observe both national and foreign players. ISM has an operational office in Perugia (Italy) and hosts more than 200 foreign players per year from different countries.

The president of ISM, Dominici Alessandro, while president of the professional youth academy of Perugia A.C. in Serie A (1997-2005) participated in the development of Major Italian and international players such as:

-->Gennaro Gattuso (Glasgow Rangers, A.C. Milan)

-->Andrea Ranocchia (F.C. Internazionale)

Along the years, the Empoli F.C. youth academy gave rise to international professional players such as:

The partnership will see opportunities for coaching collaboration, National Identification Camps international try-outs, and international invitations to tournaments with other top European clubs. The Chill will experience immediate results from the partnership as ISM will be sending a coach and scout starting this spring.

ISM Technical Director and program coordinator Luis Pomares states, “ISM and Empoli FC are glad to celebrate the beginning of a technical collaboration with Thunder Bay Chill SC, one of the most important clubs in Canada. We are ready to bring near to different soccer realities, to help, to shape and to support the young player’s development. I’m sure that we are in the right place where talented and future professional players are and will grow.”

The Thunder Bay Chill will begin its 14^th year of operation in the community. Registrations for house league have started with the program to start the 1^st week of May. Trials for reserve competitive teams begin April 12^th at the Lowery’s Sportsdome. PDL season ticket deadline is April 14^th.

“This will be a great opportunity to expose our fans to top level soccer and one of the best professional clubs in North America”, replied Chill manager John Marrello. The last professional team to play an exhibition game against the Chill was the Toronto Lynx (formerly from the USL Division II league) in 2005.

The Chill is entering the 14^th year of PDL play and is scheduled to play their home opener on May 18^th.

The Thunder Bay Chill continued their annual pilgrimage to Winnipeg, Manitoba on the Family Day weekend sending 16 teams to the Golden Boy Youth Soccer tournament. The Chill sent all teams from 8 to 18 year olds in both the male and female categories. The Club was successful taking home 4 of the possible 6 championships today.

Taking home championships were the Reserve Males, Reserve Females, Jr. Reserve Males, and Elite Females. The Academy Females, Academy Males and Reserve Male 97’s all took home Silver.

All Chill teams participated in a total of 62 games over the weekend. The overall Club record was 33 wins, 20 losses, and 9 ties. The Club will be closing off the indoor session in the next few weeks before taking a break prior to kicking off the outdoor season in early April. The Club would like to thank all the players and parents for their professionalism over the weekend. As well a special thanks to our parent helpers and coaches – Neto, Lento, Robertson, Petraglia, Rider, and Ezzard.

The league consists of 65 teams throughout North America (including a team in Bermuda), with four new teams joining the loop for 2013, including the New York Magic – F.A. Euro, Real Boston Rams, the SW Florida Adrenaline and a franchise in Oklahoma City.

There were no changes to the alignment for the Heartland Division within which the Thunder Bay Chill competes. The division will still consist of 7 teams including the Des Moines Menace (who have gone through a general manager and coaching change since the end of last season), the Kansas City Brass, Real Colorado Foxes, Springfield Demize, St. Louis Lions, and WSA Winnipeg.

The Chill will start the season on the road against WSA Winnipeg on Saturday May 25thand Sunday May 26^th. Des Moines travels to Thunder Bay for the Chill’s league home opener on Saturday June 1^st. The Chill continue their home stance on Friday June 7^th and Saturday June against the St. Louis Lions before hitting the road again the following weekend for a pair of games in Des Moines.

Springfield makes a return to Thunder Bay after a one year absence for a couple of games on June 21^st and 22^nd. Thunder Bay then hits the road for the annual Missouri road trip playing the Demize on June 29^th, St. Louis on June 30^th, and Kansas City on July 2^nd. The regular season ends at home when WSA Winnipeg travels to Thunder Bay for a pair of games on July 19^th and 20^th.

“We believe that a player should spend one year in high school first before potentially joining Vancouver Whitecaps. This is a crucial step in our recruitment process; it provides us with an adjustment year and an indication of the player’s grades in high school as well as character, attitude, personality, attendance and work rate. These are important factors and valuable knowledge for our club”, states Neely.

The relationship is a working progress between Thunder Bay and Vancouver Whitecaps and could serve as a logical progression for future Chill youth players aspiring to play professional soccer. The Whitecaps FC Residency is a fully funded program for players who participate in the U16 or U18 Programs and is a perfect way to start an education in football both on and off the field. The program models many of the top clubs in Europe which could serve as a great opportunity for future Chill youth players.

Anthony has been selected to represent the U14 boys Squad who will travel to France for a 10 day tour in March and compete with some of the best Academies from Europe. He will then have the opportunity to compete in the National All-Stars in July and represent team Ontario.

In the meantime, Valente trains at home with the Chill Jr. Reserve team who are preparing for the Club provincials at the end of the month. Valente becomes the 6th player from the Chill Youth program who has been invited to represent Ontario during its Club history. Playing for the Provincial team has facilitated additional rewards as well. If history repeats itself, every player exposed to the Provincial program has gone on to prestigious universities and colleges on soccer scholarships. As well the males have all been signed and played at some time with the PDL first team.
 

Q & A WITH ANTHONY VALENTE

1. How has it been adapting to the Provincial Team, because of your travel distance?
It is frustrating arranging travel do to the limited options. I feel quite comfortable with the team just wish I could spend more time with my co-players on the field.

2. Do you do any extra work on your own? If so what?
As well as attending training with the Provincial team in Toronto, I also train everyday on my own or with the Thunder Bay Chill.

3. How has the Thunder Bay Chill, helped with your progression to the next level?
The Thunder Bay chill coaching staff, has helped me understand the game and assist in my playing skills.

4. What are your future goals in Soccer?
If I am rewarded a scholarship do to my efforts in soccer I would be happy and very great full.
And play for my country one day.

5. Who is your favorite Soccer player & team?
El Shaarawy is my favorite player and AC Milan is my Favorite team.

6. What are your strongest attributes as a player?
My 1v1 skills and my vision in attack are my strongest attributes to the team. I also have had success in finishing the play for my team.

The U15 Ontario Boys Provincial team will travel to Cannes, France in March to play International Friendlies against European Academies. During this 10 day tour they will attend a French Division One professional match and play 5 friendly matches. Later in the spring the team will also compete in a small tournament in Quebec and then culminate in July to participate in the National All-Stars where all Provinces will compete to see who will be crowned National Champions.

Q & A – With Evan Sawula

1.       HOW OFTEN DO YOU TRAVEL TO TORONTO TO BE WITH THE SQUAD?

2.       HOW HAS IT BEEN ADAPTING TO THE PROVINCIAL TEAM BECAUSE OF YOUR TRAVEL & DISTANCE FROM THE TEAM?

It’s a long way to go for 3 hours of practice per weekend. We end up coming home very late on Sunday’s depending on when the Sunday session ends. The game is faster and a lot quicker with the players being very athletic. I have an aunt who lives in Brampton who makes travelling easier by letting us stay with her each weekend.

3.       DO YOU DO ANY EXTRA TRAINING ON YOUR OWN, IF SO WHAT?

In the backyard every day, working on my ball control, I also go to Chapples Park in the summer to work on shooting from different angles.

4.       HOW HAS THE THUNDER BAY CHILL HELPED YOU WITH YOUR PROGRESSION TO THE NEXT LEVEL?

I started at a young age and I was given the opportunity to play & train with a higher age group & receive great competition with tournaments and league play. The Chill have helped me develop all attributes of my game throughout my many years with the club.

One day I would like to play for the national team and hopefully play in a professional league.

I like different players for different positions – My favorite defender is Sergio Ramos, My favorite Midfielder is Mario Gotze, My favorite Striker is Fernando Torres & my favorite team is Spain.

7.       WHAT ARE YOUR STRONGEST ATTRIBUTES AS A PLAYER?

I believe my strongest attributes are my footskills, dribbling technique and my passion for the game.
