Thunder Bay Chill U14 Boys defeated the FC London 98 in the first semi-final of the day by a score of 4-3 on Kicks from the Penalty Mark after regulation time ended in a 1-1 draw. London’s only goal came from Andrew Stevens, while Matthew Pawlicki scored Thunder Bay’s lone goal.

In the Under 14 Boys Final, "NORTH" met "EAST" with Ottawa South United Force 98 and Thunder Bay Chill facing off. Ottawa started with a goal five minutes into the first half, and continued the trend for the remainder of the game.

Ottawa scored the first goal of the game on a good shot to the top corner, scored by Mitchell Kurylowicz. Ottawa’s Dani Gorelov then gave his team a three goal lead after scoring two more goals. Michael Avarello added to his team’s tally with a hard shot in front of the Thunder Bay keeper.

Ndzemdzela Langwa scored the last two goals for Ottawa with two similar shots to the top corner of the Thunder Bay net. Thunder Bay’s only goal of the game split Lanqwa’s two goals when Anthony Valente netted the ball off a scramble in front of the net. The final score was 6-1 for Ottawa South United Force who take the Under 14 Boys Trophy home with them.

Mackenzie Pytyck recorded the shut-out for the Chill while Patrick Van Bellenghem and Kristian Zanette get two goals each and Mitchell Voell getting the single. The Chill dominated the game from the start with Voell getting the winner in the 15^th minute. The Chill never looked back with a lock on the lead 3-0 at the half.

The Ontario Cup, the Provincial Soccer Championship, is the largest competition of its kind in Canada, and is The Ontario Soccer Association’s flagship property. The Ontario Cup is one of the oldest sporting events in Canada, first staged in 1901 and operated continuously since that date (with the exception of World War 2).
 
The Ontario Cup involves close to 12,000 athletes, from Windsor’s Roselands to Thunder Bay’s Sleeping Giant, from the Nation’s Capital to Niagara Falls. The competition commences in May, with over 660 teams being drawn into either a Knock-Out round or a Round-Robin style tournament, leading to a pre-determined set of venues throughout the Province for the Semi-Finals held in August. It culminates with the Final Round at The Soccer Centre in Vaughan, with the added prize of a National Club Championship in the Under 14’s, Under 16’s, Under 18’s, Men’s and Women’s divisions.

“Winning an Ontario championship is always prestige and special. I am very proud of the boys considering the age of our roster. We actually have only four players who are 17, three are 16, and the remainder of the boys is 15”, states Head Coach Saverio Lento.

The Reserves are considered the 2^nd team to the PDL squad that lost in their 2^nd straight final four this past August. “We saw this year Jon and Gavin who were part of the 1^st Ontario Cup championship a few years back and now play in our PDL team and I can see this team having similar candidates in a few years,” replied PDL coach Tony Colistro.

This Ontario Cup championship concludes the outdoor season for another Chill youth competitive club. The Girls U14 Select team will play Wednesday night in the Senior Women’s title game and that will finalize the outdoor season for 14 Chill youth competitive teams. The outdoor season was a success for all teams in particular the U14 Boys winning the North Region Soccer title and U12 Boys winning the USA Cup Gold A Flight division.

The Club now prepares the indoor training program. Parents are invited to attend a meeting at the Prince Arthur Waterfront Hotel and Suites this Thursday September 22, 2011 at 7:00pm to find out more information about the program.

Going into the 2nd half down 1-0 the Chill U17’s made some minor adjustments, it took 1min for the Chill to strike back and equalize by a goal from Patrick Vanbellenghem. In the 56th min a great solo run by Paul Ochnicki who then played the ball across to Patrick Vanbellenghem who slotted in his 2nd of the game to give the Chill a 2-1 lead. Strong defence from the Chill saw the Chill victorious and advance to the final with a 2-1 win. The Chill U17's will face North Mississauga Panthers on Sept 18th.

The Thunder Bay Chill U14 Boys completed the final weekend of league play here in Thunder Bay this weekend. The Chill finished the season with a 9-1-2 record with a total of 29 points and winners of the 2011 NRSL.

The Kitsap Pumas rallied from a halftime deficit as a pair of goals by Matt Friesen lifted them to a 3-1 victory against the Thunder Bay Chill and send the side into its first USL PDL Championship game at Bremerton Memorial Stadium on Friday night.

Despite having most of the play, the Pumas found themselves down at the break after a penalty kick was converted by Thunder Bay’s Gustavo Oliveira. The Pumas finally broke through after the break, though, as Bryan Burke headed home before Friesen’s double, including a remarkable shot from a narrow angle, gave his side victory.

The host Pumas opened the game strongly, putting together good attacking movements but failing to find a quality finish. The best early chance fell to Robby Christner, who shot wildly after a good knock-down by Daniel Scott from a free kick into the penalty area.

The Chill, who reached the final in 2010, eventually settling into a counter-attacking rhythm, and it was that approach that brought them the opening goal. Luis Rodriguez broke down the right side and into the penalty area, and as he went to cut the ball back onto his right foot, he was brought down by Kitsap’s Elliott Fauske. Oliveira stepped up and sent Kitsap goalkeeper Bryan Meredith the wrong way on the Chill’s first shot of the night.

But despite being down at the break, Friesen said the side held onto the belief that the goals were coming.

“We went in at halftime and were like, ‘you know, we’re 1-0 down, but it’s coming,’ ” Friesen said. “ ‘We’re not going to change anything, we’re just going to go as we are and hopefully we get one,’ and we got three.”

The first came from a set piece on the hour mark as Chrisner found Burke for a close-range header. Then Friesen scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 72nd minute after the Pumas were able to hold pressure inside the Thunder Bay penalty area. The ball came to Friesen on the right, and he lashed a shot just inside the post, finding the left side-netting.

“I didn’t see a pass, so I was like, ‘I’m going to hit this across the face, hopefully it gets a touch,’ it was going to be dangerous either way down there,” Friesen said. “It came a little bit inside-out and just went straight in. I wasn’t necessarily going for a straight in, but it went straight in.”

That proved to be too much for the Chill to overcome.

“I think we did OK in the first half, but the better of the legs got to us,” Thunder Bay coach Tony Colistro said. “We’ve done a lot of travel this year and we saw it against them in the second half. They’re a good teams and they deserved to win for sure.”

Friesen added the third from the penalty spot in second-half stoppage time, icing an impressive victory. The Pumas will now face the Laredo Heat on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. PDT for the championship in a game that can be seen on FOX Soccer. After a strong victory in front of their passionate supporters, Friesen is excited to play for a championship in front of them.

“It’s huge, and I’m glad [owner] Robin [Waite] and the community were able to bring it here because it would mean so much more if we can win it in front of our fans, “ Friesen said. “It’s the biggest game some of us will have played and it means a lot to all of us. A lot of us are getting older and came back this year saying this maybe is our last year, we don’t know, but we’ve got to go and win it.” 

Although the tournament was hindered with rain, lightning, shortened games, and heat delays, the Chill club managed to move 5 teams past the round robin stage, 2 teams winning silver, and 1 team bringing home gold for a 2^nd straight year.

The Chill U12 boys defeated EPSC 98’s 2-0, Mpls. Blackhawks 8-0, and tied Sioux City Strikers to advance to the quarter finals. The quarter finals were an easy game as the Chill demonstrated their offensive strength in beating MKSC Elite with a 9-0 win. The Semi-Final match-up was a legendary affair as the Chill faced the New York Cosmos of the legendary Cosmos soccer team of the NASL. The Chill beat them with a strike by Mathew Pawlicki. The final was a rematch of last season’s final which could not be decided in regulation play. The teams went to penalties from the spot with Alex Pike getting the winner. Zachary Hynna was the shot stopper for the Chill.

The Chill U12 boys have now won their 3^rd straight tournament in a row, winning the USA CUP in 2010, the Golden Boy International tournament in February, and the 2011 USA CUP.

“They are a great group of players, they all know each other very well on and off the field, which is important on building good team chemistry.” states Coach Saverio Lento.

The Chill U14Boys and U11 Boys also had great tournaments losing in the finals and coming home with Silver medals.

The Chill U14 Girls and U13 Boys both came out of their respective pools only to lose out in the semi-finals.
